Rajrani Music Festival: Celebrating Indian Classical Music & Heritage Architecture

The Rajrani Music Festival (officially known as the Rajarani Music Festival) is an annual three-day celebration of Indian classical music held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Set against the illuminated backdrop of the 11th-century Rajarani Temple, the festival brings together vocalists and instrumentalists from across the nation to perform Hindustani, Carnatic, and Odissi classical music.

Organized by the Department of Tourism, Government of India in collaboration with Odisha Tourism and the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi, the festival takes place annually in mid-January (January 18–20). It serves as a tribute to Odisha’s architectural heritage and classical musical traditions.

The Venue: Rajarani Temple

The festival takes its name from its venue—the historic Rajarani Temple, built during the Somavamsi dynasty.

Unlike most active temples in Bhubaneswar, Rajarani Temple has no residing deity inside its sanctum (Garbhagriha). This neutral, artistic character makes the temple manicured lawns an open-air venue for classical music recitals.

The festival spans three consecutive evenings, organized around different streams of Indian classical music.

1.Odissi Vocal & Instrumental Ensemble:Evening Openings.

Each evening opens with classical Odissi vocal recitals or instrumental compositions featuring traditional instruments like the Mardala, Bansi (flute), and Sitar, honoring Odisha’s classical music heritage.

2.North Indian Vocal & Instrumental Performance:Hindustani Segment.

Renowned vocalists and instrumentalists perform ragas from the Hindustani tradition. Audiences experience Khayal renditions, Santoor, Sarod, Tabla, and Sitar performances under the open sky.

3.South Indian Classical Traditions:Carnatic Segment.

The festival features Carnatic music masters delivering Kriti compositions accompanied by Veena, Violin, and Mridangam, showcasing the unity of India’s classical music traditions.
