Konark Dance Festival: Classical Elegance Against the Sun Temple

Set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of the 13th-century Konark Sun Temple—a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the “Black Pagoda”—the Konark Dance Festival is one of India’s most prestigious cultural events. Held annually from December 1st to December 5th, this five-day extravaganza brings together world-renowned exponents of classical dance and music under the open, starry skies of coastal Odisha.
Organized jointly by Odisha Tourism and Odishi Nrutya Mandal, the festival serves a dual purpose: celebrating India’s rich classical dance traditions and showcasing the timeless architectural genius of Odisha’s historical monuments.

Historical & Architectural Context

The venue itself is a living tribute to Indian art and movement. Built by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty in 1250 AD, the Sun Temple is designed in the shape of a colossal stone chariot with 12 pairs of exquisitely carved wheels pulled by seven horses.

The temple’s Natya Mandap (Dancing Hall) features hundreds of ancient stone sculptures depicting musicians, drummers, and dancers in various classical poses (Bhangis). The Konark Dance Festival transforms this ancient architectural rhythm into a live, breathing performance on an open-air stage situated right in the foreshores of the illuminated monument.

Curated by world-renowned sand artist and Padma Shri awardee Sudarsan Pattnaik, this event features national and international sand sculptors creating temporary masterpieces on the golden sands of the Bay of Bengal based on global, environmental, and cultural themes.
