Anla Navami (also known as Akshaya Navami or Amla Navami) is a profoundly sacred Hindu festival celebrated on the ninth day (Navami Tithi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the holy lunar month of Kartika (October/November).

  1. The Divine Residence in the Amla Tree: According to the Skanda Purana and Padma Purana, Goddess Lakshmi performed intense penance under an Amla tree. Pleased by her devotion, Lord Vishnu manifested there. It is believed that during the holy month of Kartika, all sacred rivers and deities reside within the roots, trunk, leaves, and fruits of the Amla tree.
  2. Akshaya Merit: Like Akshaya Tritiya, any act of devotion, fasting, tree planting, or charity (Dana) performed on Akshaya Navami produces eternal spiritual benefit that never diminishes over lifetimes.

The Famous Sakhigopal “Radha Pada Darshan”

While Anla Navami is observed in homes across India, in Odisha it transforms into a massive pilgrimage at the Sakhi Gopinath Temple in Sakhigopal.

Ritual Sequence of Anla Navami

In domestic households and community groves, rituals focus on purificatory baths, tree worship, and open-air dining.
  1. Purification & Worship: Devotees wake up at dawn, take a holy bath, and clean the area around an Amla tree. They decorate the trunk with vermilion, sandal paste, flower garlands, and yellow threads.
  2. Offerings & Circumambulation: Devotees perform Pradakshina (walking around the tree 9 or 108 times) while chanting Vishnu mantras. Offerings of milk, water, sweetmeats, and fresh Amla fruits are made at the base of the tree.
  3. Vanabhoji (Picnic Under the Amla Tree): A cherished custom of Anla Navami is preparing and consuming meals under the shade of an Amla tree (Amla Chhaya Bhojan). Eating food cooked beneath the tree is believed to cure ailments and purify body and mind.
