Sudasa Brata: The Sacred Ten-Knot Ritual of Goddess Lakshmi

Sudasa Brata (also known as Sudasha Vrata) is a deeply revered, traditional vow observed by married women in Odisha. Dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi, this ritual is unique because it is not tied to a fixed date on the calendar. Instead, it is observed whenever a rare and highly auspicious astrological alignment occurs: a Thursday (Gurubara) coinciding with the tenth day (Dashami Tithi) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in any Hindu lunar month.
The word Sudasa translates to “ten good fortunes” or “ten auspicious conditions” (Su meaning good/auspicious, and Dasa meaning condition or ten). Women observe this strict fast to seek marital harmony, domestic peace, long life for their husbands, and economic prosperity.

  1. The Divine Protection Thread: The central motif of the ritual is a handmade sacred yellow thread (Brata Doru) containing 10 distinct knots. Sanctified through mantras, this thread acts as an amulet of divine grace and protection against misfortune.
  2. Renewal of the Sacred Thread: A woman wears this sacred thread around her right arm continuously. Whenever a new Sudasa Brata day arrives, the old thread is reverently replaced with a freshly consecrated ten-knot thread.

Key Ritual Sequence of Sudasa Brata

Preparations begin before dawn, turning households into sacred spaces adorned with traditional folk art.
1.Sanitation & Jhoti Chita Artistry:Pre-Dawn.

Courtyards and worship spaces are thoroughly cleaned. Women draw intricate rice-paste art called Jhoti Chita on doorsteps and floors, painting lotus flowers, threshold borders, and the symbolic footprints of Goddess Lakshmi (Laxmi Pada).
2.Preparation of the 10-Knot Thread:Morning.

A white cotton thread is folded ten times and dyed yellow using fresh raw turmeric (Haladi). Women tie 10 sacred knots along its length while reciting sacred names of Goddess Lakshmi.
3.Puja & Recitation of the Brata Katha:Mid-Day.

A wooden pedestal (Khatuli) is set up with a metal pitcher (Kalasa) or a traditional paddy-measuring cup (Mana). Offerings of 10 lotus flowers, 10 betel leaves, 10 grass blades (Durba), and 10 fruits are placed before the deity while women read or listen to the Sudasa Brata Katha.
4.Tying the Thread & Breaking the Fast:Afternoon / Evening.

After Maha Arati, the newly consecrated yellow thread is tied around the right upper arm of married women. The day-long fast is broken by partaking in the 10 steamed Manda Pitha cakes offered as Prasad.
