Khordha Zilla Lok Mahotsav

The Khordha Lok Mahotsav (also known as the Khordha Zilla Lok Mahotsav) is a major multi-day socio-cultural festival held annually in the Khordha district of Odisha, India. Organised to celebrate the rich historical legacy, indigenous arts, and folk traditions of the region, the event serves as a platform to promote rural artisans and keep ancient Odia heritage alive.

1. Historical & Cultural Significance

Khordha holds a unique place in Indian history as the land of the Paika Rebellion (1817)—one of the earliest armed uprisings against British colonial rule led by Bakshi Jagabandhu. The festival explicitly honors this martial heritage, using the platform to celebrate both local heroism and Odia folk culture.

2. Key Attractions & Highlights

The festival typically runs for 5 to 7 days during the winter months, drawing thousands of visitors from across the state.
  • Paika Akhada & Martial Arts: A major highlight featuring traditional Paika warriors performing acrobatics, swordplay, and shield maneuvers that honor the region’s historic military traditions.
  • Folk Performances & Music: Every evening features classical and folk dance forms, including Gotipua, Sambalpuri dance, Chhau, and Odissi, alongside classical music and local theatrical performances (Jatra).
  • Pallishree Mela (Handicrafts & Handlooms): Integrated into the mahotsav through ORMAS (Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society), the mela hosts hundreds of stalls showcasing terracotta, stone carvings, pattachitra paintings, and handloom textiles directly from rural self-help groups (SHGs).
  • Odia Culinary Heritage: Food stalls display authentic regional delicacies, ranging from Pitha varieties and Cuttack Dahibara Aloodum to local sweets like Khaja and Rasagola.
  • Book Fair (Pustak Mela): Local publishers and literary societies set up pavilions to encourage Odia literature and showcase historical texts related to the Khordha kingdom.
