Chandan Yatra: The 42-Day Water Festival of Puri

Chandan Yatra (also known as Gandhalepana Yatra) is the longest-running festival celebrated at the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. Spanning 42 continuous days, it begins on the highly auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya (typically late April or early May) and extends into the scorching peak of summer.

The word Chandan means sandalwood paste, and Yatra means journey or festival. True to its name, the core purpose of this festival is to keep the deities cool during the sweltering heat of summer by applying aromatic sandalwood paste and offering cooling water rides in decorated boats.

The Dual Phases: Bahara & Bhantara Chandan

Chandan Yatra is strictly divided into two equal phases of 21 days each:

  1. Bahara Chandan (Outer Chandan – Days 1 to 21): The public phase of the festival. Lord Jagannath’s representative deity, Lord Madanamohana, alongside Goddess Sridevi, Goddess Bhudevi, and the Pancha Pandavas (five representative Shiva idols: Lokanath, Jameswar, Markandeya, Kapalmochan, and Nilakantha), step out of the Srimandir sanctum every evening to visit the historic Narendra Tank (Narendra Pokhari).

  2. Bhantara Chandan (Inner Chandan – Days 22 to 42): The private phase held inside the Jagannath Temple premises. The rituals take place in four sacred water tubs filled with sandalwood water, rose water, and flowers located within the temple complex (such as the Jala Krida Mandap).

Key Rituals of Bahara Chandan (Narendra Tank)

The first 21 days offer one of the most visually mesmerizing spectacles in Odia culture.

1.Gimini Procession to Narendra Tank:Late Afternoon.

The deities are carried out of Srimandir on ornate palanquins (Vimanas) accompanied by temple servitors, music, gongs, and dancing girls (Devadasis historically / traditional Gotipua dancers). Devotees line the streets to shower flowers and sandalwood paste.

2.Chandan Lepana (Sandalwood Application):Evening.

Upon reaching the Narendra Tank, the small brass deities are immersed in tubs filled with chilled water, rose water, camphor, and sweet-smelling sandalwood paste to provide relief from the summer heat.

3.Chapa Khela (The Water Cruise):Dusk.

The deities are boarded onto two grand wooden boats called Chapas:

  • Nanda (Red & Yellow Boat): Carries Lord Madanamohana, Sridevi, and Bhudevi.

  • Bhadra (Red & White/Blue Boat): Carries the Pancha Mahadevas (Shiva idols).

    The boats cruise gently around the Narendra Tank amid glowing oil lamps, traditional music, and fireworks.

4.Bhaunri Yatra:Final Day (Day 21).

The 21st day culminates in Bhaunri Yatra (the festival of circles). The boats perform 21 continuous circular rounds along the perimeter of the tank, accompanied by grand musical performances and elaborate fireworks displays.

Significance to Ratha Yatra

Chandan Yatra is intrinsically linked to the legendary Puri Ratha Yatra:

  • Chariot Construction Begins: Day 1 of Chandan Yatra (Akshaya Tritiya) marks the official beginning of chariot building for Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra outside the royal palace (Raja Nahara).

  • Sanctioning Timber: Sacred timber logs brought from the forests of Dasapalla are consecrated with special prayers on this exact day.

Cooling Summer Offerings (Bhoga)

Throughout Chandan Yatra, special cooling and digestive food offerings are prepared for the lords and shared with devotees:

  • Manduo & Pana: Cool milk-based elixirs infused with green cardamom, ripe bananas, cottage cheese (Chenna), and black pepper.

  • Chandan water: Chilled water flavored with edible camphor, crushed flowers, and sandalwood paste.
